Moving Tips From a Woman’s Perspective: Planning a Local Move in South Florida

My name is Geniza and I manage Moving With Sebastian a 5-star Google-rated moving company in Boca Raton, Florida. As a woman managing a busy moving company, I try to help my customers by sharing my time-tested moving tips to make the process easier and less overwhelming.

From color coding boxes and packing efficiently to taking pictures of how electronics were set up to setting up utilities, these moving tips from a woman’s perspective will help you stay organized and stress-free!

1. Plan Ahead – Even Without a Set Date

Start packing early, even if you don’t have a set moving date. Organize and pack a box or two each day with non-essential items like holiday decorations or out-of-season clothing. This gradual approach reduces stress and makes the final packing process more manageable.

Color-Coding Boxes: Using a color-coded marker system for each room makes moving more organized. Green for the kitchen, blue for the living room, yellow for the office—you get the idea. Each box gets a specific marker color and a number, helping both you and your local movers in Boca Raton keep track of everything. It also speeds up unpacking.

Drawing a Layout: Sketch a layout of your new home and label each room with its marker color. Indicate where furniture should go so movers know exactly where to place items. This simple step makes unpacking much easier.

PRO TIP
As you disassemble items (bed frames, shelving, etc.), snap pictures
of how pieces fit together and place all small parts (screws, bolts, brackets)
in labeled ziplock bags taped to the furniture.

2. Setting Up Utilities

Before moving day, make sure to cancel utility services at your current home and set them up at your new residence. If you’re relocating from out of town, some utility providers may require deposits before activation, so it’s best to handle this early.

Electricity

Florida Power & Light (FPL) services most of South Florida, including Boca Raton and Delray Beach. Schedule disconnection at your old home and activation at your new address in advance.

Water, Sewer, and Trash

Each city manages its own water and waste services. Contact your city’s utility provider to set up an account or transfer service:

Internet and Cable

South Florida offers several internet and cable providers. Check availability and set up service before moving to avoid delays:

Handling utilities ahead of time ensures a smooth transition into your new home, so you’re not left without essential services on moving day.

3. Label Wires and Electronics

In this day and age, we all have a collection of tangled wires behind our TVs, computers, and entertainment systems. One of our top tips is to label each wire clearly. Use ziplock bags and make sure each one is labeled for the correct device—TV, sound system, computer, etc.

This way, when you arrive at your new home, you won’t waste time sorting through a mess of cables. We recommend doing this in advance when you pack up—it’s a huge time-saver!

4. Take Valuables With You

There are some things you simply don’t want to trust to anyone else during a move. Jewelry, important paperwork, medications, and of course, your kids and pets, should all travel with you.

As a busy woman, we often think about the little things, but they make a big difference on a moving day. Trust us, you don’t want to be worrying about misplaced valuables while managing the chaos of a move. Keep them close to you, whether you’re moving in Delray Beach or anywhere else.

5. Pack an ‘Arrival Day’ Box

Moving doesn’t just mean boxes and furniture. You’ll also need the basics to survive the first day or two in your new place. Pack an ‘arrival day’ box with things like a change of clothes, toiletries, snacks, phone chargers, and even cleaning supplies. If you have kids or pets, include their favorite toys or bowls too. This box should be packed last so that it’s the first thing you unpack when you arrive.

PRO TIP
Always make sure to pack a few extra trash bags, wipes, and toilet paper!
You’d be surprised how many people forget these essentials.

6. Take a Break and Order Food for the Crew

Moving day can be exhausting for everyone, so why not make it a little easier on yourself and your movers? Once everything is packed and ready to go, order pizza (or your favorite comfort food) for the movers and your family. It’s a great way to take a break and recharge after the hard work. Plus, your movers will really appreciate the gesture!

7. Get a Good Night’s Sleep

One of our best moving tips is to prioritize rest. Since you’ve already color-coded and labeled your boxes, you’ll know exactly where to find your sheets and towels as soon as the bed is set up. That way, you can unpack the essentials and crawl into bed for a well-earned night’s sleep in your new home.

8. Special Items Need Special Attention

When you have valuable or fragile items, it’s crucial to hire a moving company with experience in handling them. A lot of Delray Beach movers are great at general moves, but not all of them specialize in delicate items. Finding movers with specific expertise is vital to ensure that your high-value items arrive at your new home safely—whether it’s moving a piano, fine art, or antique furniture.

I thought moving our family of four from Jacksonville to Delray Beach would be pure chaos but Moving With Sebastian took on everything! It was such an easy move. Things I expected would take my husband and myself forever to do were done by their movers in no time at all, I could not be more impressed by their moving services.

9. Don’t Overlook the Details

As women, we tend to think of everything—sometimes even the small stuff that others might overlook. But, the little things matter on moving day. Be sure to:

  • Grab Your Keys: Make sure you have the keys to your new home and that your old keys are left with the realtor or landlord.
  • Change Your Address: Don’t forget to update your address with the post office and other accounts.
  • Check Local Services: If you’re moving to a new area, look into local healthcare providers, schools, and nearby grocery stores.
